Ian Explains: What Is a Switch Interface?

How access switches connect to computers, tablets and apps

If you have an access switch and want to use it with a computer or tablet, you may also need a switch interface. But what does an interface actually do, and how do you know which one to choose?

Hello, I’m Ian from Inclusive Technology. In this guide, I’ll explain how switch interfaces work and look at three options for accessing computers, tablets, apps and switch-enabled software.

What does a switch interface do?

An access switch has a simple job. When someone activates it, the switch sends a signal. On its own, however, a computer or tablet may not know what that signal means.

A switch interface sits between the switch and the device. It translates each activation into a command the device can understand, such as Space, Enter, an arrow key or a mouse click.

In simple terms, the switch is what the person activates. The interface tells the computer or tablet what should happen next.

Do you always need a switch interface?

No. Some switch-accessible products have a switch socket built in. A compatible adapted toy, communication aid or environmental control device may allow a switch to be connected directly.

Some switches already include interface functionality. The iSwitch connects directly to compatible tablets, smartphones and computers through Bluetooth. The Blue2 FT also connects through Bluetooth and combines two proximity-sensitive activation areas with a built-in interface. In compatible setups, neither requires a separate interface.

The ToFFEE Switch with Time of Flight technology, includes adjustable proximity detection and five output modes. It uses a standard 3.5mm connection and can connect directly to compatible equipment with a switch socket.

The answer therefore depends on the switch, the device and what you want the activation to do. Always check the connection and compatibility requirements before choosing your setup.

Which switch interface should you choose?

The first question I ask is what you want the switch to control.

A simple activity on a computer may only need one or two commands.

Other software may require a choice of keyboard or mouse functions, while tablets need an interface designed to communicate with mobile devices.

Here are three examples.

1) Inclusive Simple Switch Box: straightforward computer access

The Inclusive Simple Switch Box connects one or two wired switches to a computer through USB.

Its sockets produce Space and Enter commands, making it a straightforward option for compatible switch-enabled software.

No additional software needs to be installed.

2) Multi2 Switch Box: more commands and flexibility

The Multi2 Switch Box also connects one or two wired switches to a computer through USB.

A rotary control offers ten modes, including keyboard commands, arrow keys and mouse clicks, giving you more flexibility across different switch-enabled programs.

No additional software needs to be installed.

3) APPlicator: switch access for tablets and apps

The APPlicator connects to compatible iOS and Android devices through Bluetooth and accepts up to four wired switches.

It supports switch-accessible apps, including HelpKidzLearn apps, as well as music and media controls.

Although the interface connects wirelessly to the device, the switches plug into APPlicator.

What should you check before choosing?

Start with the person and the activity, rather than the interface itself. Consider:

  • Whether the switch will control a computer, tablet or another device.
  • Which commands the software or app expects.
  • Whether one, two or more switches will be used.
  • Whether the device requires USB or Bluetooth connectivity.
  • Where the switches and interface will be positioned.

It is also important to check that the chosen switch, interface and software are compatible with one another. A flexible interface can offer more options, but a simpler model may be all that is required for a familiar activity.
