VoIP Background Course: Screen 1 of 12

Introduction

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a new technology, but it builds upon existing digital processing.  To begin this course we will explain a bit about how digital audio processing works.

All digital audio systems, including digital phone systems, perform three functions on the audio signal they receive, such as your voice.

They digitize it, which means convert it into computer data by measuring it at intervals and assigning a whole number to each value.

They compress it to reduce the amount of data that needs to be stored or transmitted.

They transmit it to the intended destination.

We will look at each of these functions a little more closely.
