Information technologies (IT) includes computers, software, copiers, phone systems, websites, and more: every product or service that is used to store or communicate information in almost any form. Obviously a large and growing category! Unfortunately, many IT products have unintended barriers to people with disabilities.
Starting this year, all federal agencies must begin to purchase only IT that is accessible, both to their employees and to the public. Section 508 and the standards for IT accessibility put forth by the Access Board and as implemented by FAR will change the way agencies and technology providers do business together. Already procurement officers are receiving training on Section 508. Leading companies have re-engineered their product processes to make sure that accessibility is considered early in design and development.
Inclusive Technologies works with federal agencies, groups of employees with disabilities, and IT companies to make this transition smooth and effective. Our goal is to help these stakeholders past a "bare compliance" mentality. The bigger picture shows opportunities for innovative solutions, new products and features, and overall improved usability, resulting in greater productivity for employees with disabilities without straining IT resources.
